See toe-tapping musical Mack and Mabel at LIPA

Musical Mack and Mabel is being staged at LIPA next week.

Third year dance students are performing the show in the Paul McCartney Auditorium from November 2-4.

The musical, which was premiered in the US in 1974, tells the story of the tempestuous relationship between Keystone Studios director Mack Sennett and his silent movies star, comedienne Mabel Normand. From the moment Mabel first arrives on the set of the ‘King of Comedy’s’ latest film, she catches his eye and soon afterwards his heart. She becomes his biggest star, but ambition, dalliance and the inevitable threat posed by talking movies puts unbearable pressure on their relationship.

Rachel Dixon, who plays Mabel to Michael Askew’s Mack, says: “It’s such an emotional rollercoaster, you go through ever single element of life. There are a lot of funny scenes, but then equally a lot of heartbreak and a lot of anger.

“I feel like the audience will become very attached to the characters and their emotional journey, and I think it is such a special show in that sense.”

The show features songs including I Won’t Send Roses and Tap Your Troubles Away.
