John and Yoko show heads for Museum of Liverpool

An exhibition dedicated to John Lennon and Yoko Ono will remain open at the Museum of Liverpool until November. The decision was taken to extend the run of Double Fantasy - John and Yoko from the original closing date of April because of demand. Since it opened in the waterfront museum's Wondrous Place gallery last May it has been seen by more than 300,000 people. Double Fantasy – John & Yoko charts the couple’s partnership as creatives and also as campaigners for peace, as w

Sting talks about The Last Ship sailing in to Liverpool

“When I see a film of a ship being launched, for some reason I tear up,” says Sting. “I can’t explain why. “There’s something about the profound, symbolic nature of a ship which is deeply rooted within me.” The son of Tyneside fought against his roots for many years, putting thousands of miles between his Wallsend childhood and his multi-millionaire superstar life as an Englishman in New York. But recently something changed, and the man born Gordon Sumner who grew up in the s

Double bill of Shakespeare at Epstein Theatre

The Bard is coming to the Epstein Theatre in a double bill of comedy and tragedy. Daniel Taylor Productions presented an immersive version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Hanover Street theatre last year. Now the company is returning with the supernatural favourite paired with the story of star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet. The plays will be staged in repertory between April 11 and 21. Actor/director Taylor, who Liverpool audiences will know for his role as Sammy in Bl

Cinderella brings a ballroom blitz to Liverpool

Sir Matthew Bourne makes his annual visit to the Liverpool Empire next month with a return for his popular Cinderella. The New Adventures production previously enchanted audiences at the Lime Street venue in 2011. Now the ballet, danced to Prokofiev’s stunning score – composed during World War II, and which under Bourne is transported from a fairytale kingdom to Blitz-hit London, is back. Prince Charming is a dashing RAF pilot who meets Cinderella on one magical evening, befo

Early Doors tickets as pub sitcom comes to Echo Arena

Craig Cash and Phil Mealey’s pub sitcom Early Doors is taking to the road on tour with a date at the Echo Arena. Early Doors Live will come to the waterfront venue on October 7, and tickets go on sale at 10am tomorrow. The BBC sitcom original aired in 2003-4, and centred around Ken (John Henshaw), landlord of The Grapes, a small Stockport pub, and the goings on with family, friends and customers. Cash and Mealey played best friends and regulars Joe and Duffy, while the TV cas

Liverpool Biennial 2018 seeks a beautiful world

A large-scale sculpture inspired by Liverpool’s hidden architectural history, a new film about Liverpool’s musical heritage, and a ‘healing’ garden created in the middle of Toxteth are among the works in this year's 2018 Liverpool Biennial. More than 40 artists from 22 countries are presenting work at this year’s contemporary art festival, which runs from July 14 to October 28, responding to the theme Beautiful world, where are you? Works are spread across the city centre and

Have a wine time on the banks of the Mersey

The Bordeaux Wine Festival will be staged in the UK for the first time when it forms part of the Three Festivals Tall Ships Regatta in Liverpool this weekend. The prestigious Fête le Vin attracts half-a-million people to the banks of the Garonne every two years to celebrate the world of French South West wine. And this year it will also be staged on the banks of the Mersey over the regatta weekend. Early bird tickets are £18, rising to £20, and then £25 on the day (subject to
Review: Klezmer-ish at the Music Room ****

Review: Klezmer-ish at the Music Room ****

The Liverpool Phil actively encourages its players to progress their own musical interests and ambitions outside the confines of the symphony orchestra. A number of musicians have formed their own off-shoot groups, including Klezmer-ish which has developed a loyal and growing following – as its two sold out nights in the Music Room this week demonstrates. The band, whose repertoire stretches from tango and hot jazz to traditional Irish, and yes, sinuous klezmer music, explore
Saturday Night Fever brings disco to Liverpool Empire

Saturday Night Fever brings disco to Liverpool Empire

How deep is your love for Saturday Night Fever? Because the disco-tastic musical which pulses to the beat of Bee Gees’ classics is coming to the Liverpool Empire as part of a new UK tour. Liverpool impresario Bill Kenwright is the man behind the new stage version of the musical which made John Travolta a star of the big screen 40 years ago. The show tells the story of working class Italian-American Tony Manero, who is fed up with being stuck in a dead-end job, and his determi

Lennon's Banjo playing at the Epstein Theatre

Lofts have been scoured, garages cleared out and that old box under the bed has long been sifted through. And yet remarkable Beatle-related memorabilia is still being discovered – almost 50 years after the band split up. Some items can make huge sums at auction, with instruments belonging to the Fab Four going under the hammer for hundreds of thousands, even millions of pounds. In the last two years an annual memorabilia valuation day at The Beatles Story has uncovered a set
